A Lemoore mechanic's guide to brake noise, vibration and repair
Brakes rarely fail without warning. Knowing the signs helps you fix a small problem before it turns into a big bill.
Warning signs your brakes need attention
- High-pitched squealing when you stop. Many pads have a built-in wear indicator that squeals when they get thin.
- Grinding or scraping. This often means the pad material is gone and metal is hitting the rotor.
- A vibration or pulsing in the brake pedal or steering wheel, often from rotors that have worn unevenly.
- A soft or spongy pedal, which can point to air or moisture in the brake fluid, or a leak.
- The car pulling to one side when you brake.
- A brake warning light on your dash.
Pads vs. rotors: what's the difference?
Brake pads are the friction material that squeezes against the rotor to stop the car. They're designed to wear out and are replaced most often. Rotors are the metal discs the pads press against. They last longer, but they wear thinner over time and can become grooved or uneven, especially if worn pads are left too long.
Do I need new rotors every time I replace pads?
Not always. If your rotors are still thick enough and smooth, new pads alone may be fine. If they're below the minimum thickness, deeply grooved or causing a vibration, replacing them with the pads gives you smooth, quiet stops. We measure your rotors and show you photos in a digital inspection, so you can decide with the facts in front of you.
Don't forget the brake fluid
Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which can lower its performance and lead to corrosion inside the system. Many manufacturers recommend changing it on a schedule, so check your owner's manual or ask us during your inspection.
