Your guide to passing a California smog check the first time
Got a smog notice from the DMV? Here's what to expect when you bring your vehicle in for a smog check in Lemoore.
When you need a smog check in California
- Every two years for most vehicles, when your DMV renewal notice says one is required
- When you sell most vehicles
- When you register a vehicle brought in from another state
Newer gas vehicles, electric vehicles and some older vehicles are exempt. Your DMV renewal notice will tell you if a smog check is required.
What to bring
- Your vehicle and keys
- Your DMV renewal notice, if you have one
- Your current registration
How to get ready
- Make sure your check engine light is off. A lit check engine light is an automatic fail.
- Drive the vehicle for at least 20 minutes before the test so the engine is fully warmed up.
- Don't disconnect the battery or clear codes right before your test. That resets the computer's readiness monitors, and the vehicle may not be ready to test.
What happens if you fail
A failed smog check isn't the end of the road. Common causes include a check engine light, a faulty oxygen sensor, a vacuum leak or a worn catalytic converter. Our technicians find the cause, show you what we found with a digital inspection and photos, and quote the repair before any work starts.
STAR station notices
Some DMV notices say a STAR-certified station is required. Lemoore Tire and Auto is not a STAR-certified station, so if your notice says STAR, you'll need a STAR-certified shop for that test. If it doesn't, we can take care of it.
