Smog check rules for military families moving to Lemoore, CA
Moving to NAS Lemoore on PCS orders? If you drove or shipped a car here from another state, California's smog rules are one of the first things to sort out. Here's what applies, in plain language.
Do I have to register my car in California?
Not always. California lets nonresident active-duty service members and their spouses keep driving with valid plates from their home state or their last duty station, as long as the registration and insurance stay current. Many families stationed at NAS Lemoore do exactly that.
When do I need a smog check?
If you register your vehicle in California, you'll need a smog check. The California DMV says there is no nonresident military exemption from the smog inspection once a vehicle is being registered here. Most used vehicles from other states must also meet California emissions standards before they can be registered. You'll also need one when you sell most vehicles in California.
Some bases set their own rules for vehicles driven on base, so check with NAS Lemoore Pass and ID or your command for current requirements.
What to bring
- Your vehicle and keys
- Your current registration, out-of-state or California
- Your DMV renewal notice, if you have one
The DMV also requires a VIN verification for vehicles coming from out of state. Check the California DMV website for the forms and fees that apply to you.
What if my car fails?
A failed smog check usually points to a fixable problem, such as a check engine light, a faulty oxygen sensor or a vacuum leak. Our technicians find the cause, send you a digital inspection with photos, and quote the repair before any work starts. Learn more about our check engine light diagnostics.
