When a check engine light is urgent, and when it can wait
Your check engine light can mean anything from a loose gas cap to a serious engine problem. How it's lit tells you how urgent it is.
Solid check engine light
A steady light means your vehicle's computer has detected a problem and stored a trouble code. It's usually not an emergency, but don't ignore it. Common causes include a loose or damaged gas cap, a failing oxygen sensor, a vacuum leak, an emissions system problem or a misfire that comes and goes. Schedule a diagnosis soon, because small problems can lower fuel economy and grow into bigger repairs.
Flashing check engine light
A flashing light usually means the engine is actively misfiring. Unburned fuel can overheat and damage the catalytic converter, which is an expensive part to replace. Reduce speed, avoid hard acceleration, and get the vehicle checked as soon as possible. If the car runs very rough, stop driving it.
Why a code isn't a diagnosis
Free code readings tell you where the computer noticed a problem, not what caused it. A misfire code, for example, could come from a spark plug, an ignition coil, a fuel injector or a vacuum leak. Proper testing finds the actual cause, so you only pay for the repair you need.
Check engine light and smog checks
In California, a vehicle with the check engine light on will fail its smog check. If your smog is due, fix the light first. We can diagnose the problem and perform your smog check at the same shop.
